Hidden Agenda Behind War on Terror
After three weeks' bombing, not a single terrorist implicated in the attacks on America has been caught or killed in Afghanistan.
Instead, one of the poorest, most stricken nations has been terrorised by the most powerful - to the point where American pilots have run out of dubious "military" targets and are now destroying mud houses, a hospital, Red Cross warehouses, lorries carrying refugees.
Unlike the relentless pictures from New York, we are seeing almost nothing of this.
Tony Blair has yet to tell us what the violent death of children - seven in one family - has to do with Osama bin Laden.
And why are cluster bombs being used?
The British public should know about these bombs, which the RAF also uses.
They spray hundreds of bombs that have only one purpose; to kill and maim people.
Those that do not explode lie on the ground like landmines, waiting for people to step on them.
If ever a weapon was designed specifically for acts of terrorism, this is it.
I have seen the victims of American cluster weapons in other countries, such as the Laotian toddler who picked one up and had her right leg and face blown off.
Be assured this is now happening in Afghanistan, in your name.
None of those directly involved in the September 11 atrocity was Afghani.
Most were Saudis, who apparently did their planning and training in Germany and the United States.
The camps which the Taliban allowed bin Laden to use were emptied weeks ago.
Moreover, the Taliban itself is a creation of the Americans and the British.
In the 1980s, the tribal army that produced them was funded by the CIA and trained by the SAS to fight the Russians.
The hypocrisy does not stop there.
When the Taliban took Kabul in 1996, Washington said nothing.
Why?
Because Taliban leaders were soon on their way to Houston, Texas, to be entertained by executives of the oil company, Unocal.
With secret US government approval, the company offered them a generous cut of the profits of the oil and gas pumped through a pipeline that the Americans wanted to build from Soviet central Asia through Afghanistan.
A US diplomat said: "The Taliban will probably develop like the Saudis did."
He explained that Afghanistan would become an American oil colony, there would be huge profits for the West, no democracy and the legal persecution of women.
"We can live with that," he said.
Although the deal fell through, it remains an urgent priority of the administration of George W. Bush, which is steeped in the oil industry.
Bush's concealed agenda is to exploit the oil and gas reserves in the Caspian basin, the greatest source of untapped fossil fuel on earth and enough, according to one estimate, to meet America's voracious energy needs for a generation.
Only if the pipeline runs through Afghanistan can the Americans hope to control it.
So, not surprisingly, US Secretary of State Colin Powell is now referring to "moderate" Taliban, who will join an American-sponsored "loose federation" to run Afghanistan.
The "war on terrorism" is a cover for this: a means of achieving American strategic aims that lie behind the flag-waving facade of great power.
The Royal Marines, who will do the real dirty work, will be little more than mercenaries for Washington's imperial ambitions, not to mention the extraordinary pretensions of Blair himself.
Having made Britain a target for terrorism with his bellicose "shoulder to shoulder" with Bush nonsense, he is now prepared to send troops to a battlefield where the goals are so uncertain that even the Chief of the Defence Staff says the conflict "could last 50 years".
The irresponsibility of this is breathtaking; the pressure on Pakistan alone could ignite an unprecedented crisis across the Indian sub-continent.
Having reported many wars, I am always struck by the absurdity of effete politicians eager to wave farewell to young soldiers, but who themselves would not say boo to a Taliban goose.
In the days of gunboats, our imperial leaders covered their violence in the "morality" of their actions.
Blair is no different.
Like them, his selective moralising omits the most basic truth.
Nothing justified the killing of innocent people in America on September 11, and nothing justifies the killing of innocent people anywhere else.
By killing innocents in Afghanistan, Blair and Bush, Howard stoop to the level of the criminal outrage in New York.
Once you cluster bomb, "mistakes" and "blunders" are a pretence.
Murder is murder, regardless of whether you crash a plane into a building or order and collude with it from the Oval Office and Downing Street.
If Blair - Howard was really opposed to all forms of terrorism, he would get Britain - Australia out of the arms trade.
On the day of the twin towers attack, an "arms fair", selling weapons of terror (like cluster bombs and missiles) to assorted tyrants and human rights abusers, opened in London's Docklands with the full backing of the Blair government.
Britan biggest arms customer is the medieval Saudi regime, which beheads heretics and spawned the religious fanaticism of the Taliban.
If he really wanted to demonstrate "the moral fibre of Britain", Blair would do everything in his power to lift the threat of violence in those parts of the world where there is great and justifiable grievance and anger.
He would do more than make gestures; he would demand that Israel ends its illegal occupation of Palestine and withdraw to its borders prior to the 1967 war, as ordered by the Security Council, of which Britain is a permanent member.
He would call for an end to the genocidal blockade which the UN - in reality, America and Britain - has imposed on the suffering people of Iraq for more than a decade, causing the deaths of half a million children under the age of five.
That's more deaths of infants every month than the number killed in the World Trade Center.
There are signs that Washington is about to extend its current "war" to Iraq; yet unknown to most of us, almost every day RAF and American aircraft already bomb Iraq.
There are no headlines.
There is nothing on the TV news.
This terror is the longest-running Anglo-American bombing campaign since World War Two.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the US and Britain faced a "dilemma" in Iraq, because "few targets remain".
"We're down to the last outhouse," said a US official.
That was two years ago, and they're still bombing.
The cost to the British taxpayer? £800 million so far.
According to an internal UN report, covering a five-month period, 41 per cent of the casualties are civilians.
In northern Iraq, I met a woman whose husband and four children were among the deaths listed in the report.
He was a shepherd, who was tending his sheep with his elderly father and his children when two planes attacked them, each making a sweep.
It was an open valley; there were no military targets nearby.
"I want to see the pilot who did this," said the widow at the graveside of her entire family.
For them, there was no service in St Paul's Cathedral with the Queen in attendance; no rock concert with Paul McCartney.
The tragedy of the Iraqis, and the Palestinians, and the Afghanis is a truth that is the very opposite of their caricatures in much of the Western media.
Far from being the terrorists of the world, the overwhelming majority of the Islamic peoples of the Middle East and south Asia have been its victims - victims largely of the West's exploitation of precious natural resources in or near their countries.
There is no war on terrorism.
If there was, the Royal Marines and the SAS would be storming the beaches of Florida, where more CIA-funded terrorists, ex-Latin American dictators and torturers, are given refuge than anywhere on earth.
There is, however, a continuing war of the powerful against the powerless, with new excuses, new hidden agendas, new lies.
Before another child dies violently, or quietly from starvation, before new fanatics are created in both the east and the west, it is time for the people of Britain to make their voices heard and to stop this fraudulent war - and to demand the kind of bold, imaginative non-violent initiatives that require real political courage.
The other day, the parents of Greg Rodriguez, a young man who died in the World Trade Center, said this: "We read enough of the news to sense that our government is heading in the direction of violent revenge, with the prospect of sons, daughters, parents, friends in distant lands dying, suffering, and nursing further grievances against us.
"It is not the way to go...not in our son's name."
Is Al Qaeda Just a Bush Boogeyman?
To even raise the question amid all the officially inspired hysteria is heretical, especially in the context of the U.S. media's supine acceptance of administration claims relating to national security.
Yet a brilliant new BBC film produced by one of Britain's leading documentary filmmakers systematically challenges this and many other accepted articles of faith in the so-called war on terror.
"The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear," a three-hour historical film by Adam Curtis recently aired by the British Broadcasting Corp., argues coherently that much of what we have been told about the threat of international terrorism "is a fantasy that has been exaggerated and distorted by politicians.
It is a dark illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the security services and the international media."
Stern stuff, indeed.
But consider just a few of the many questions the program poses along the way
If Osama bin Laden does, in fact, head a vast international terrorist organization with trained operatives in more than 40 countries, as claimed by Bush, why, despite torture of prisoners, has this administration failed to produce hard evidence of it?
How can it be that in Britain since 9/11, 664 people have been detained on suspicion of terrorism but only 17 have been found guilty, most of them with no connection to Islamist groups and none who were proven members of Al Qaeda?
Why have we heard so much frightening talk about "dirty bombs" when experts say it is panic rather than radioactivity that would kill people?
Why did Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claim on "Meet the Press" in 2001 that Al Qaeda controlled massive high-tech cave complexes in Afghanistan, when British and U.S. military forces later found no such thing?

Of course, the documentary does not doubt that an embittered, well-connected and wealthy Saudi man named Osama bin Laden helped finance various affinity groups of Islamist fanatics that have engaged in terror
Nor does it challenge the notion that a terrifying version of fundamentalist Islam has led to gruesome spates of violence throughout the world.
But the film, both more sober and more deeply provocative than Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," directly challenges the conventional wisdom by making a powerful case that the Bush administration, led by a tight-knit cabal of Machiavellian neoconservatives, has seized upon the false image of a unified international terrorist threat to replace the expired Soviet empire in order to push a political agenda.
Terrorism is deeply threatening, but it appears to be a much more fragmented and complex phenomenon than the octopus-network image of Al Qaeda, with Bin Laden as its head, would suggest.
While the BBC documentary acknowledges that the threat of terrorism is both real and growing, it disagrees that the threat is centralized
"There are dangerous and fanatical individuals and groups around the world who have been inspired by extreme Islamist ideas and who will use the techniques of mass terror - the attacks on America and Madrid make this only too clear.
But the nightmare vision of a uniquely powerful hidden organization waiting to strike our societies is an illusion.
Wherever one looks for this Al Qaeda organization, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the 'sleeper cells' in America, the British and Americans are chasing a phantom enemy."
The fact is, despite the efforts of several government commissions and a vast army of investigators, we still do not have a credible narrative of a "war on terror" that is being fought in the shadows.
Consider, for example, that neither the 9/11 commission nor any court of law has been able to directly take evidence from the key post-9/11 terror detainees held by the United States.
Everything we know comes from two sides that both have a great stake in exaggerating the threat posed by Al Qaeda: the terrorists themselves and the military and intelligence agencies that have a vested interest in maintaining the facade of an overwhelmingly dangerous enemy.
Such a state of national ignorance about an endless war is, as "The Power of Nightmares" makes clear, simply unacceptable in a functioning democracy.

Over the last two weeks the Bush administration has orchestrated yet another campaign to sow fear and anxiety among the American people with unsubstantiated claims that signs are mounting of a looming Al Qaeda terrorist attack.
Not a day goes by without suggestions by Bush or top Homeland Security officials that an attack perhaps on the scale of 9/11, or worse, is being prepared.
As always, the mass media dutifully report such claims as authoritative, without questioning the lack of evidence beyond the bald assertions of intelligence and other government officials.
The deliberate cultivation of a climate of fear is a basic modus operandi of the Bush White House.

Can it be an accident that Bush is once again resorting to scare tactics at a time when his poll numbers are dropping to record lows, popular opposition to the war in Iraq is rising, and the administration is openly declaring that its war policy will not be bound by elections or debates in Congress?
The sudden reemergence of Al Qaeda as a supposed threat to the safety and security of every American coincides with a political counteroffensive in which critics of Bush’s military escalation are branded as either dupes or aiders and abettors of the terrorists.

* On July 17, the Bush administration released an unclassified summary of its National Intelligence Estimate, which claimed the US was facing a “heightened threat environment” for terrorist attacks because Al Qaeda had found a safe haven in Pakistan’s tribal areas, from where it could plot such attacks.

* On July 24, Bush gave a near-hysterical speech at a South Carolina air force base, where he insisted that the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq would result in terrorist attacks on the US.
He repeated the absurd claim that US troops in Iraq were “fighting bin Laden’s Al Qaeda” and said that following the advice of those advocating a draw-down of US troops in Iraq would be “disastrous for America.”
* The same day, Air Force General Victor Renuart, who heads the US Northern Command, established by the Bush administration to oversee military operations within the US, told the Associated Press that the American military needs to triple its domestic military forces to counter the growing threat from Al Qaeda, which, he claimed, was actively preparing another terrorist attack in the US.
“I believe there are cells in the United States, or at least people who aspire to create cells in the United States,” Renuart said.
He called the National Intelligence Estimate a “summary of drumbeats, and the drumbeats are getting more prevalent out there. You cannot afford to ignore that.”
Asked if he was concerned about an attack in the US this summer, he replied, “I have to be concerned that it could happen any day.”
* Over the past few days, television news broadcasts have prominently featured a recent alert issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), warning federal air marshals and other law enforcement agencies to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft.
The July 20 warning was based on the seizure of “curious” items found in the luggage of a handful of passengers over the last year, including “wires, pipes or tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances,” such as blocks of cheese.
Security officers were instructed to keep any eye out for “ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components,” because they might be used to test airport security.
The agency admitted, however, that none of the passengers with any of these items were found to have any connections to criminal or terrorist organizations.
TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe subsequently downplayed the story, saying Tuesday, “There is no credible, specific threat here.
Don’t panic.
We do these things all the time.”
Her remarks follow a well-established pattern.
The government issues dire warnings which are given sensationalist coverage by the media.
In most cases, there follow acknowledgments that the government has no concrete evidence of a specific terrorist plot.
Why, then, the gratuitous alarms?
The media never bothers to ask a government official to explain.
This has been the stock-in-trade of the Bush administration since the 9/11 terrorist attacks—an event which itself has never been seriously investigated and for which no accounting has been given of supposed intelligence lapses that point to the possible complicity of the government itself.
At numerous points in Bush’s tenure, terror warnings have been issued in the midst of damaging revelations and political events that shook the administration.
For example, two days after the May 18, 2002 revelation that Bush had received a presidential briefing five weeks before 9/11, warning of a terrorist attack within the US, FBI director Robert Mueller announced more attacks were “inevitable.”
The next day, officials declared that US railroads and key New York City monuments were threatened.
In the days following Secretary of State Colin Powell’s February 2003 speech at the UN, where he claimed the US had incontrovertible evidence that Iraq had WMDs, and mass international anti-war demonstrations on February 15, a US official warned of potential bio-terror attacks and advised Americans to stock up on duct tape and plastic sheeting to protect themselves.
Similar unsubstantiated warnings followed the Abu Ghraib revelations of US torture of Iraqi detainees, the revelation of CIA doubts about false pre-war claims that Iraq attempted to purchase uranium from Niger, the 9/11 Commission’s conclusion that the attacks were preventable, and news that Karl Rove might be indicted in the CIA leak case.
The Bush administration has set out to make fear and anxiety over terrorism the center of public life, while running a secret agenda.
It hopes to appeal to the confusion of more backward sections of the population in order to bludgeon popular opposition to its agenda of militarism and political repression at home.
In so doing, Bush has enjoyed the support of the Democratic Party, which, far from exposing this cynical attempt to manipulate public opinion, has fully embraced the so-called “war on terror.”
The Democrats have frequently attacked Bush for not going far enough in “securing the homeland.”
There is no doubt that the brutal neo-colonialist foreign policy of the US government has placed the American people in danger of another terrorist attack.
However, the greatest threat to the democratic rights and safety of the American people, and the people of the world, comes not from Islamic extremists in the Middle East, but from US imperialism and the warmongers in Washington.

The 1 hour, 17 minute video also featured a computer-animated recreation of a March 2006 suicide attack that killed U.S. diplomat David Foy in Karachi, Pakistan, and testimony from a man who claimed to be the bomber.
"We shall continue to target you, at home and abroad, just as you target us, at home and abroad, and these spy dens and military command and control centers from which you plotted your aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq," said Adam Gadahn, a Californian also known as Azzan al-Amriki.
Of course, as usual, WaPo fails to mention that Adam "Gadahn" is actually Adam PEARLMAN - the Jewish grandson of a former "board member on the Anti-Defamation League, a notoriously anti-Gentile organization[.]"
Gadahn was charged with treason in the United States last fall and has been wanted since 2004 by the FBI, which is offering a $1 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
He last appeared in a video in May, threatening the United States with an attack worse than those of Sept. 11, 2001.
The authenticity of the video, which was first carried on the Web site of terrorism expert Laura Mansfield, The video could not be independently confirmed But it featured the logo of al-Qaida's media production house, as-Sahab.
The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group also said it had obtained a copy of the video.
Militant Web forums have been announcing the imminent arrival of a new video featuring Gadahn for days.
In the video, which had Arabic subtitles, Gadahn wore a traditional Arab red-and-white checkered scarf and spoke in English.
It was not known when the footage was filmed because he did not describe any specific events.
"Years of bitter trial and experience have revealed the danger (embassies) pose and shown that the only way to deal with them when they refuse to leave of their own accord is to expel them by force," Gadahn said.
Al-Qaida's No. 2, Ayman Zawahri, also appeared in the terror group's latest video, outlining what he described as the crimes of Western countries against the Islamic world.
As he spoke, the video showed images of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as mosques being destroyed.
The March 2006 attack that killed Foy, which was claimed by al-Qaida, also killed three Pakistanis and wounded about 50 others a day before President Bush made an official visit to Pakistan.

Turns out that they pay a couple of third-rate privately owned, US-based counter-terrorist organizations to provide them with a constant stream of terrorist propaganda from popular Islamic evil-doers.
The unique access these two groups have to these terrorist 'releases' is nothing short of remarkable.
It's almost as if they have an exclusive license to market the world's most popular foes.
And boy are they hard at work for their clients - whoever they are.

The advertisement banner was signed by As-Sahab, the production branch that releases al-Qaida videos, and had an old picture of bin Laden.

The IntelCenter said the promised message was expected within 36 hours.

Ever wonder how the government gets access to audio and video tapes from the likes of terrorist masterminds like Ossama Bin Laden or Ayman El Zawahri?
Turns out that they pay a couple of third-rate privately owned, US-based counter-terrorist organizations to provide them with a constant stream of terrorist propaganda from popular Islamic evil-doers.
The unique access these two groups have to these terrorist 'releases' is nothing short of remarkable.
It's almost as if they have an exclusive license to market the world's most popular foes.
And boy are they hard at work for their clients - whoever they are.
[The pace of messages] has increased dramatically this year - with four audiotapes from bin Laden and seven audios and videos by his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri.
Hours after Friday's message appeared, an advertisement on the same Islamic Web site said bin Laden would issue another tape directed to "the Islamic nation in general and the mujahedeen in Iraq and Somalia in particular."
A similar announcement proceeded bin Laden's message Friday by about 24 hours.
The advertisement banner was signed by As-Sahab, the production branch that releases al-Qaida videos, and had an old picture of bin Laden.
The teaser was first reported by the SITE Institute and the IntelCenter, two U.S.-based independent groups that provide counter-terrorism information to the U.S. government and media.
The IntelCenter said the promised message was expected within 36 hours.
How would they know???

The “Fatty Bin Laden Tape”

December 13, 2001 the first and shoddiest of the “Bin Laden Speaks from the Grave” tapes appeared.
The video’s sound and picture quality were horrible.
It showed a big guy with a black beard, doing a passable imitation of Bin ’s voice, claiming foreknowledge, if not responsibility for the 9/11 attacks and chortling over their success.
He was at least 40 or 50 pounds heavier and his facial features were obviously different.
The “Fatty Bin Laden tape” was widely ridiculed and I have yet to meet an informed observer who considers it authentic.
(If you haven’t figured this out yet, go back and look at the images from the tape and compare them to other images of Bin Laden.)

It was an audio tape delivered to al-Jazeera in the fall of 2002.
The CIA verified it as “authentic,” but ended up with egg on its face when the world’s leading voice identification experts at IDIAP in Switzerland reported that “the message was recorded by an impostor.” (Guardian 2002)
Every Bin Laden message since then has been equally phony.
They are released at moments when the Bush regime needs a boost - and the American (mainstream) media go along with the fraud.
